Interestingly, JanSport was founded by luck in 1967 when one of its founders, Murray Pletz, won in a design contest for backpacks. Consequently, he teamed up with his cousin Skip Yowell to establish a company that made quality backpacks. Jan Lewis, upon whose name the brand was taken, is the one in charge of sewing the bags was also the girlfriend of Pletz at the same time. And as they say it, the rest is history.

Over the years, the company has gone from one management and ownership to another.
